History
In the late 1800s Sandy Creek Farm was part of a larger parcel of farm property owned by Abel Ward. In 1900, Jennie Ward married Henry Edmund (H.E.) Machold, who developed the property into several thriving dairy farms. H. E. Machold was a successful business man, with an interest in politics. He was Speaker of the Assembly for the State of New York and at different times, President of the Northern New York Trust Company, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, and the St. Regis Paper Company. Even though H.E. Machold was an accomplished businessman, his heart was in Ellisburg and he had a great love for the North Country and its people. He had a reputation for being a kind and generous man. In 1903, H.E. and Jennie had twins, Earl and Doris. Eventually, Doris owned the original homestead on the hill, and Maple Row Farm became the home of Earl and his family.

Social gatherings have long been a part of summer life on the farm. With H.E.’s birthday being July 5, there were often large clambakes and outdoor parties. Having a Waldorf Astoria second home, the Machold’s often brought guests from New York City back to the farm to share in these lavish festivities. Sandy Creek farm became more of a gentleman’s farm, with Earl’s interest in horses and the addition of a horse barn. The jockey weathervane atop the barn is reminiscent of the frequently visited Saratoga horse track.

With it’s close proximity to Lake Ontario, the Machold’s also entertained at their Galloo Island home, where classic wood boats provided access to abundant world-class small mouth bass fishing.
